The Field School will be organized to collaboratively create the Lugares Historico’s website that will hold the proper audio, transcripts, GIS mapping, and photographs to make self-guided walking tours possible. The Field School will take place for two weeks starting in the Summer of 2026, using our networks to recruit about 20 participants who will learn the digital humanities skills needed to create the site, and also further build an intergenerational network of people dedicated to Afro-Puerto Rican history both inside and outside of the academy.
In particular, the Lugares Históricos project uniquely ties virtual and physical space together. PROPA’s Lugares Históricos project commemorates Afro-Puerto Rican heritage sites with historical markers to stake physical claims to the space in the face of Puerto Rico’s rapid gentrification since Hurricane Maria in 2017 and the advertisement of Act 22 during rebuilding efforts. The Lugares Histórico site is based on a longstanding relationship between Dr. Sarah Bruno and PROPA. It will allow people to engage on the site and across the archipelago at their own pace.
